ASEAN OSS Training Program 2005

ASIA OSS Training Program, July 2005, Singapore

The Center for International Cooperation for Computerization (CICC), Singapore conducted this second training program with School of Information Systems (SIS), Singapore Management University (SMU) from July 25 to 30, 2005 at the SMU city campus.

Background

This program has been initiated by the CICC Singapore office with the aim of creating a large number of OSS professionals to teach OSS in South and South-east Asia.

Course Content

ASIA OSS Training Program comprised of two tracks, Basic and advanced. Selected participants attended advanced section on LINUX Internals.
The course covered the following main topics:

Open Source Software and LINUX
Using the Linux Desktop
Locating Linux Help Resources
Managing Your Directories and Files
Using Internet Applications
Open Office: The MS Office Alternative
The Unix Shell, Streams & Pipes & Jobs
System Administration
Linux Internals
Using the Printer, Scanners and other devices
Networking & Integrating Linux with the MS Infrastructure. Samba Wireless Connectivity
Using LAMP
MySQL and PHP
Mail Server
Web based Application. A simple groupware application to install
Electronic Documents: Interchange and character encoding and font issues
Tips on teaching Open Source Topics
Soft Skills including Presentation Skills

In addition to above, there were presentations and discussions on the following topics:

Why Open Protocols are important?
OSS Licensing and Copyright issues
Free-Libre-Open Source Software developers in Japan and Asia
Skill set and career guidance for OSS engineers/developers/programmers
OSS Developments in Malaysia
Industrial Case study on OSS

Trainers and Guest Lecturers

As the background of the trainees is very diverse, training support became very important. The course was conducted by the following trainers from four countries India, Japan, Malaysia and Singapore.

Profile of Participants

Total number of participants were 42, including 8 students from Singapore Management University. 34 trainees from 11 Asian countries participated in this program, out of which 26 are oversea participants and 8 are from Singapore. The background of the trainees ranges from OSS projects/lab Manager/Director, Researcher, Teacher/Lecturer and System Support Personnel. In addition to 42 participants, five persons attended some of the sessions. The names of participants are given below:

Accommodation for Overseas Participants

Oversea trainees stay at Oxford Hotel Singapore, 218 Queen Street, Singapore 188549 during the course of their training.

Results

As part of the course, tests were conducted and trainees have been given feed back on their performance. At the end of the training, Mr. Toru Yamauchi, Managing Director of CICC Singapore Office and Professor Steven Miller, Dean of School of Information Systems, Singapore Management University, presented the certificates to all participants.
