The use of palm leaves as the primary medium for writing led to changes in the script or development of scripts like Grantha, Vattezhuttu (round script) and Kolezhuttu (stick-script). The scribe had to be careful not to pierce the leaves with the stylus while writing because a leaf with a hole was more likely to tear and decay faster.

Evolution of Tamil writing

Tamili script, like the other Brahmic scripts, is thought to have evolved and differs in many ways from standard Ashokan Brahmi. According to Iravatham Mahadevan, early Tamil Brahmi used slightly different vowel markers, had extra characters to represent letters not found in Sanskrit and omitted letters for sounds not present in Tamil such as voiced consonants and aspirates.
The Tamil letters thereafter evolved towards a more rounded form and by the 5th or 6th century, they had reached a form called the early vaṭṭeḻuttu. In the 4th century, the Pallava dynasty created a new script called Pallava script
Grantha and new script (Chola-Pallava script, emerged in Pallava and Chola territories. The forms of some of the letters were simplified in the 19th century to make the script easier to typeset. In the 20th century, the script was simplified even further in a series of reforms.
Tamil script was added to the Unicode Standard in October 1991 and the Unicode block for Tamil is U+0B80–U+0BFF. Characters used for fractional values in traditional accounting practices, were added to the Unicode Standard in March 2019 with the release of the Unicode block for Tamil Supplement version U+11FC0–U+11FFF:

The Indus script, also known as the Harappan script, is a corpus of symbols produced by the Indus Valley Civilisation. Despite many attempts, the script has not yet been deciphered. There is no known bilingual inscription to help decipher the script. The language used is unknown. So,the Indus script, is the collection of some 4,000 excavated inscriptions.

James Prinsep (1799-1840) was orientalist and editor of the Journal of the Asiatic Society of Bengal. He succeeded in reading Brahmi and Kharosthi scripts. The inscriptions of Emperor Ashoka are in Brahmi and Kharoshthi scripts.

Cave inscriptions in Tamil-Brahmi script at Mangulam was discovered by Robert Sewell in 1882, and deciphered by Subrahmanya Aiyer in 1924 (as usual disputed by some). Iravatham Mahadevan deciphered Tamil Brahmi, which was found on stone monuments called hero stones. He devoted 50 years of his life to visiting, documenting and deciphering the Tamil-Brahmi inscriptions engraved on the brow of natural caverns found on hills in Tamil Nadu and on pottery, coins and rings.
