China's 863 Program
In 1986, four Chinese scientists, through government backing, effected the launching of China's National High- Tech Research and Development Program (also known as "863 Program"). The overall goals of the 863 Program are:
- to bridge China's gap against developed countries in high-tech frontiers by pooling resources in selected high-tech fields.
- to drive S&T advances in other relevant fields.
- to produce high-caliber technological R&D talents.
- to create opportunities for formation of high-tech industries, and lay foundations for realizing national higher-level economic and social development around 2000.
Achievements
- Over the pas t 15 years, has supported more than 230 research directions, involving over 5,200 projects leading to more than 2,000 research results that applied for patents at home or abroad, over 47,000 papers published.
- has nurtured nearly 10,000 high-tech talent who held master's or doctor's degrees, and forged an excellent R&D contingent.
- has created newly-increased output value of more than 56 billion yuan, and indirect economic benefits up to 200 billion yuan on a cumulative basis.
