National Program for Key S&T issues
Started in 1982, the National Program for Key S&T issues is updated every five years. Its objective us to find solutions to the scientific and technological bottlenecks in the national economic and social development. With funding from both central and local governments and other sources, it includes the following:
- Spark Program: the nation's first guided development program designed to develop the rural economy through science and technology in agriculture and township enterprises.
- The National High Technology R&D Program or the 863 Program
- The Torch Program
- The National S&T Achievement Dissemination Program: to mobilize large numbers of scientists and engineers to the rural areas, to meet the technological requirements of enterprises, the countryside, and the traditional industries.
- The National Program for Key Basic Research Projects or the Scaling the Height Program: to conduct high quality research on major scientific issues that have an important bearing on the nation's science and technology as well as economic and social development and to build up a strong research manpower.
- The National Program for Science and Technology for Sustainable Development: to improve living standards and the environment, and to promote technological progress in social undertakings.
